It gives us a goal, a sense of achievement, a medal, an epic community, and usually a free beer – not to mention the wonderful memories from the race. The hard part is deciding which races to sign up to and train for. Especially in the US, where there are thousands of famous races. Literally. So to help you lace up those sneakers and get ready for an adrenaline-pumping race, we’ve rounded up the fifteen best running events the US has to offer.

1. Boston Marathon

Dubbed the holy grail of marathons, the Boston Marathon is a prestigious event that draws elite runners and passionate amateurs alike. With its iconic course and electric atmosphere, this race is an absolute must for any running enthusiast and one of the most popular races in the world.

With its Heartbreak hill (a famous uphill section located near Boston College that tests runners' endurance) and its strict qualifying times, the Boston Marathon is truly a landmark event in the world of running.

It's not an easy feat to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Here are some examples of the race's qualifying times:

For men:

- Ages 18-34: 3 hours 00 minutes
- Ages 35-39: 3 hours 05 minutes
- Ages 40-44: 3 hours 10 minutes
- Ages 45-49: 3 hours 20 minutes
- Ages 50-54: 3 hours 25 minutes

For women:

2. New York City Marathon

The New York City Marathon (or NYC Marathon) is one of the most famous running races in the world.The route is a tour of the Big Apple itself. Runners start in Staten Island, make their way through Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and finally finish up in Manhattan's Central Park. You get a little taste of all five boroughs.

The marathon started in 1970 with just 127 runners taking laps around Central Park. Now, it's a massive event with over 50,000 finishers. Plus, the energy is off the charts! Around two million spectators line the streets to cheer you on. There are bands, dancers, and all kinds of entertainment along the way.

Getting a bib can be a bit competitive. There are several ways to get in: time qualification, a lottery system, running for charity, or guaranteed entry through the NYRR (New York Road Runners) club if you meet certain criteria.

For those looking to qualify based on speed, the standards are pretty tough. For example, men ages 18-34 need to run a marathon in 2 hours 53 minutes or faster, while women in the same age group need a time of 3 hours 13 minutes or faster.

3. Los Angeles Marathon

One of the most challenging parts of the course is “Cardiac Hill,” a steep incline near Piedmont Hospital. It’s a tough climb, but the crowd will help you power through.

9. Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

There are several race options, including a full marathon (26.2 miles), a half marathon (13.1 miles), a 10K, and a 5K, making it accessible for all levels of runners.

10. Hood to Coast Relay

Distance: Approx. 199 miles, starting from Mount Hood and ending on the Oregon coast in Seaside

Team up with friends or fellow running enthusiasts for the Hood to Coast Relay, a legendary race that spans 199 miles from the majestic Mount Hood to the picturesque coastal town of Seaside. Teams are of 8 to 12 runners who take turns running different legs of the race. The race itself is divided into 36 legs, varying in distance and difficulty. Each runner typically covers three legs that range from about 3.5 to 8 miles.

Due to its popularity, getting a spot in the Hood to Coast Relay can be competitive. Registration typically opens a year in advance and fills up quickly.

11. Rose Bowl Half Marathon
